What is the Toluna Community?

What are Toluna points?
Points are a form of virtual currency awarded to Toluna members for various actions, these include: participation in surveys; inviting friends to join Toluna who complete the registration process; completing profile surveys, playing games and of course engaging in community content. When you sign up on Toluna you will receive 500 points to welcome you to the site. When you have earned enough points, you may redeem them for rewards, such as vouchers from great shops and brands. How do I become a member?
To join Toluna, simply click on "SIGN UP". You will be asked to provide some basic information when creating your account. After signing up, a confirmation email will be sent to you in order to finalise your registration. You must click the link in this email to confirm your registration on Toluna. Once your registration is complete, you can start participating in surveys, content, and games to get rewarded.
Is registration free?
Registration to Toluna is completely free - Not only will you never be asked to pay, but just by answering our surveys and engaging in fun community activities like content and games, you will earn points that can be exchanged for vouchers and cash payments.
Why should I become a Toluna member?
Becoming a member lets you take part in surveys and allows you to create your own polls and topics. You can then start to accumulate points that are redeemable for rewards, and you can also win 1,000,000 points (worth RM1,250) in our weekly prize draw.
What is Toluna's business?
Toluna invites thousands of members to answer surveys everyday on a wide array of subjects. The purpose of these surveys is to collect your opinions about the products and services of large consumer brands, your habits as a consumer, or about the world you live in. Your opinion will have a direct impact on companies and how they market, distribute or advertise new products and services to consumers like you.
Why does Toluna ask for personal information such as name and address?
We ask for personal information such as your name, address, gender, birthday and employment status to better match you with the appropriate market research projects. This information is also used for the purposes of incentive fulfillment so that we may send your reward to the appropriate recipient address. Other personal information that you may be asked to provide to us is solely for the purpose of building and operating a worldwide proprietary database of panelists, in order to conduct market research studies on that basis and we provide your responses to our surveys on to our clients in anonymised and aggregated form.
Participating in surveys
What if I have technical difficulties with a survey, and why does this happen?
We do a variety of surveys for many clients. Some of these surveys are programmed by us, others are programmed by our clients and hosted on their systems. A major factor in technical issues is that survey respondents are using a wide variety of operating systems, browsers, Internet connections, and hardware, and not all of these are necessarily compatible with the technology of a particular survey. And, of course, sometimes, human error is a factor. If you encounter a technical problem with a survey, usually, by waiting a while and trying again later, the problem will be resolved. If the same error persists, please report it to us at https://enmy.toluna.com/contactus by providing the Survey ID and a screen shot, if possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by technical errors and will do our best to get them resolved.
Why is the survey full when I just received the invitation a short time ago?
Sometimes this happens if a survey is generating greater than expected responses. Also, the invitations aren't necessarily delivered right away by your email service provider. We apologize for any inconvenience you may experience and thank you for your participation. Please know that more survey opportunities will become available.
What are profile surveys and where can I find them?
Your Profile Surveys can be accessed directly from the "Survey Centre" or via the Surveys menu in the header: "Surveys" -"Profile Surveys". Profile Surveys are designed to help us improve the level of service we provide and allows us to send you surveys that you are most likely to qualify for. Profile Surveys are divided into three categories: profiles you haven't filled in yet, profiles you have answered before, but have since been updated and require your attention (New), and profiles you have already completed. For each completed personal profile survey, you are awarded 100 points. Remember to update your profiles every 6 months to earn more points.
How can I participate in surveys on Toluna?
Finish your full registration on Toluna and verify your email by clicking on the link you receive in your mailbox. If a survey matches your profile, you will receive an invitation by email or see the surveys available in your Survey Center on Toluna. The more up to date your Profile Surveys are, the more chances you have of being invited to take part in surveys you qualify to take.e. Toluna will only send a limited number of surveys on mobile to specific users that we believe will qualify.

How many points will I earn for my participation?
For each completed survey you can generally earn between 15 and 50,000 points (depending on its length). Some special surveys could offer higher incentives.
How long does it take to complete a survey?
Survey length is strictly dependent on the study.
Will Toluna try to sell me something?
No, under no circumstances will surveys be used to sell or promote a product, nor will you receive any advertising or promotional material as a result of joining the Toluna community.
Sometimes it seems as though I've answered a lot of questions only to find out I don't qualify for the whole survey. Why?
This is because some surveys are looking for a very specific group of people who meet a very narrow set of demographic criteria. Sometimes, determining whether someone qualifies for a survey takes just a few questions, other times it may take more questions. Please know we appreciate your participation and that when you don't qualify, your responses are not used in the final research findings.

Why does it take longer to receive payment for some surveys than for others?
The timing of crediting for points or sweepstakes entries depends on the survey. For some surveys, points are credited very quickly or within a few days, while for others you will receive the points only after the survey has closed. You can expect to wait a maximum of six weeks for points to be credited to your account from when a survey closes, though we try to limit this as much as possible.

Why does Toluna keep asking the same questions in almost every survey?
Toluna's profiling process is continuous — the objective being to have broad and current attributes on each member. Our clients make marketing decisions based on responses from our members in their surveys so we must implement strict quality controls to make sure you are part of the target the client is looking for. The questions we ask at the beginning of each survey may seem repetitive but are necessary to ensure the integrity of the survey sample.
What happens to my answers when I don't qualify for a survey?
When you do not qualify for a survey, your responses cannot be used in the final research findings, and therefore are never transferred to our clients. Likewise, Toluna will never use or transfer these responses for internal use. As the information you entered is incomplete and cannot be used for our client’s research, you will not receive points when you have not completed the survey.
Surveys on Mobile
How can I participate in surveys on Mobile?
If you would like to receive surveys on your smartphone, simply enter your mobile phone number on Toluna during your registration or directly on your account page. Don’t forget to tick the option “I agree to receive invitations to surveys by SMS”.
Toluna will only send a limited number of surveys on mobile to specific users that we believe will qualify. You will not be required to answer the survey by text message. The SMS you will receive will include a link to the survey.
When you access a survey from your smartphone, please make sure you have a good internet connectivity. We recommend using a Wi-Fi secure connection, instead of taking the survey through your Mobile Internet Plan/Mobile Data, to avoid additional costs on your monthly bill/top-up.

Polls, Thumb it, Battles: Options & Settings
How do I create a poll or ask a question?
Go to the 'Community" page. Click on "Poll" in the create widget situated in the top half of the page. The widget will expand to allow you to ask a question and add 2 to 10 answer options for other members to choose from.
What is Battle
A Battle lets you post two images or videos side-by-side allowing the community to decide which one they prefer. You can see examples by hovering over the "Community" tab and then clicking on "Battle".
What is a Thumb it?
A Thumb it allows you to post an image or video to let the community decide – via a thumbs up or down – whether they like or dislike what you have presented.
Can I add an image or a video clip to a poll, a battle or a thumb it?
Yes, click on the camera icon in the create widget. Images can be attached to your content either by using the search feature or by uploading them directly from your computer; videos on the other hand can only be added via YouTube link.
How can I view poll results in detail?
Simply click on the poll question and you will be redirected to a detailed breakdown of the poll results.
Some polls only display results and cannot be voted on - why?
The poll may have already closed, or you may have already voted on it (polls are limited to one vote per user).
How can I view the polls I've created?
On your Public profile page, scroll down to the "Content" section of the wall. Here you can find all the content you have created so far. Simply select the "Polls" tab to filter.
What are sponsored polls?
Sponsored polls (also called Quick Votes) consist of 1 question and will earn you 15 points for your participation. Sponsored polls appear on the home page on your dashboard under the "Recommended" stream and additionally by clicking on "Sponsored Content" in the "SURVEYS" tab.
Topics and Opinions: Options & Settings
What is a topic?
A topic is meant to be used when you wish to discuss a subject in an open fashion. Other members can leave their own opinion and feedback regarding your question, thus creating an ongoing discussion.
How do I create a topic?
Go to the 'Community" page. Click on "Topic" in the create widget situated in the top half of the page. The widget will expand to allow you to ask a question and add your personal opinion on the subject you would like to discuss.
Can I copy an opinion from another member or another source?
This is strictly forbidden. The content of the opinion you leave is strictly personal and in no case whatsoever can your opinion come from another member or website. If we determine that a member has copied opinions from other sources, or that they have posted the same opinion on multiple topics, their account will be subject to cancellation and their points forfeited.
Can I add an image or a video clip to a topic?
Yes, click on the camera icon next to the text box. Images can be attached to your content either by using the search feature or by uploading them directly from your computer, videos on the other hand, can only be added via YouTube link.
Can I add my opinion to an existing topic or question?
Yes, you can do this by clicking on "Post" which will expand the topic to allow you to write your opinion in the text box provided. You can also click on the question itself which will redirect you to that topic's page.
How can I express my appreciation for another member's feedback?
Under each opinion you will see a "Thumbs up" option - if you agree or appreciate the opinion, click "Thumb up". It's that simple.
How can I view the topics I've created?
On your Public profile page, scroll down to the "Content" section of the wall. Here you can find all the content you have created so far. Simply select the "Topics" tab to filter.
What are "Favourites" and how do I "favourite" something?
Favourites are polls and topics chosen by you for being so exceptional, that you'd like to keep them in mind and perhaps check on later. To favourite content, simply click on the heart icon in the bottom of each topic/poll. Then you can find them again later as they will be added to your "Recommended" stream.
When exploring polls and topics what are the "Recent" and "Popular" options?
The "Recent" tab displays all content created on Toluna by order of recency, the most recent content showing up at the top. Content in "Popular" shows up based on a set of information such as the number of votes or opinions and how recently those polls/topics were posted.

Rating Content
Why should we rate content?
Toluna is all about proposing interesting experiences to our members. This is why we thought it necessary to allow you the opportunity to help us personalise our content feed by only showing content that our Influencers would like to interact with. By rating content, you can make sure that you see quality discussions and that the most interesting content will display at the top of the "Recommended" feed.
How can we rate content?
"On each content, you will see 2 arrows:
Upvote - Arrow pointing up: allows you to indicate which content you find most engaging.
Downvote - Arrow pointing down: if you feel that a specific content is not interesting enough to show up on the main feed, you can choose to express that feeling by downvoting it. "
What happens when I upvote content?
"When you upvote a piece of content, this adds to its popularity. If many people like you, have upvoted the same content, it will be considered as engaging and show up in the ""Recommended"" and ""Popular"" sections.
Of course, content selected by the community as being of quality is more likely to get rewarded. "
What happens when I downvote content?
"When you downvote a piece of content, this decreases its popularity. If many others like you, have downvoted the same content, it will be considered as low quality and not show up in the ""Recommended"" or ""Popular"" sections.
If a piece of content is widely downvoted, the community managers will investigate, and have it deleted if necessary."

What if these rating options are used abusively?
"Toluna takes pride in making sure that interesting content is always pushed to the top and that our tools cannot be used to bully or harass fellow influencers. This is why we have taken measures to ensure that manual checks are in place and good content cannot be abusively downvoted.

Account & Profile
How do I change my email address and password?
Log in, then from your Profile tab at the top of the page, select "Account details". From the left menu, click on "Login Settings" and enter your new email address and/or password. To submit, you will also need to indicate your current password so we can make sure you are the owner of the account. Click "SAVE' to complete the process.
How can I edit my personal information?
Log in, then from your Profile tab at the top of the page, select "Account details". From the left-hand menu, select "Personal Details". Simply make the necessary changes and click "SAVE" to confirm.
How can I cancel my account?
To cancel your account you must first log in, then from your Profile tab at the top of the page, select "Account details". At the bottom on the left-hand side of the page, you will see the "Unsubscribe Options" link. You will then have the option of unsubscribing from emails while remaining a Toluna member (in this case you must visit the site to take part in surveys) or completely cancelling your account. Please note that if you choose to cancel your account, your points will be forfeited, and you will no longer be able to redeem them.
Can I change my username?

Usernames can only be changed once, so please choose wisely

What are 'Followers' and 'Following'?
Followers are Toluna members who have chosen to follow you to easily find your content (probably because they like your content). Following indicates those you have chosen to follow. You can find their content in the tab 'Recommended'.
How do I follow or unfollow someone?
To follow a user:
Go to that member's profile page and click on the 'Follow' button in the top right-hand corner.

Privacy
What is done with the information I filled out when signing up?
Your profile data is stored on our secure server that allows only Toluna to call upon those members who match specific criteria to participate in surveys. This query is completely automated and members are contacted via email by Toluna to participate in our secure surveys. All responses are held in aggregate, which means that individual responses are not linked to personally identifiable information. The information you provide will never be sold or used to advertise. You are not responsible for paying any product or service at any time, nor will any company solicit you as a result of joining the Toluna community.
Why do you ask questions about age, income and other personal information?
This information is used to match members with specific survey requirements. In some cases our clients require feedback from people in a certain income bracket or those who have children, for example. Please be assured that this information is securely kept and strictly confidential. See our privacy policy for more details. The more information you provide, the greater your chances of receiving invitations to surveys you may qualify for, and the more opportunities you may receive to earn cash rewards.
Can I limit the visibility of the content I create on Toluna?
Yes, when you create content ,open the "Security" drop-down and select from three different options: Public (everyone can see your content), Friends (only your Toluna followers will see your content) or Private (only members/friends you share the link with will see your content). In addition, when you set the security listing to Public it will be searchable from all search engines, whilst under Friends or Private, it will not. So choose wisely!
Toluna and the General Data Privacy Regulations
What is GDPR and how does it relate to me?
The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new regulation that addresses the collection, use, processing and transfer of the personal data of European Union citizens. It went into effect on May 25th, 2018. It applies to all European Union member states and any entity that transfers the personal data outside of the European Union. We have updated our Privacy Policy to make it easier for you to understand what information we collect, why we collect it, how we use it and who has access to it. Please don't hesitate to read it.
What constitutes personal data?
Personal data is any information related to a Toluna Influencer that can be used to directly or indirectly identify the user. Personal data can be anything from a name, a photo, an email address, bank details, posts on social networking websites, medical information, a device IP address or a mobile device ID. Toluna will always take special care to ensure that all personal information you share with us is protected at all times. We strongly discourage you from disclosing any of your personal data in any public forum or community area on the site that you do not wish to make available to the public.
Do I have full control of my data?
Yes, you do. At any time you can modify your information or opt out from our services data by logging into your Toluna Account or by sending us an email request via the Contact Us form.
Notifications
What are notifications?
Notifications are messages that appear in the top right, on the globe icon.
What do notifications "notify" me of?
Notifications indicate when new surveys you qualify for are available; the results of recent contests; when a user follows/favourites you or content you have created; when a user posts a message on your wall, and finally (and certainly not least!) when The Toluna Team has important information for our Influencers.

Points and Rewards
What are the ways I can earn points?
First, you must be a registered Toluna member with a verified email address to begin accumulating points. Once your registration is finalised, you can earn points by completing surveys found here on Toluna or through invites you receive via email. You can earn extra points by voting on sponsored polls, filling out your Profile Surveys, inviting your friends to join Toluna, creating content and participating in our Games.
How many points can I earn?
There is no limit to how many points you can accumulate on Toluna as there is no limit to how much you can Influence your world with Toluna!
Do points have to be used within a certain time limit?
Yes. When points are credited to your account, they will remain valid for 16 months. If after this period the points have not been used, they will automatically expire and be deleted from your account. Your points will not expire all at once, instead, points will expire 16 months after you originally earned them (for example: if you have earned points on the 15th of March 2019, they will be removed on the 28th of July 2020 if they are still in your account). This deduction will always occur towards the end of the month in which they were earned, near the 28th. Please don't wait until the last moment to redeem your points.
How can I check my points balance?
Click your Profile icon tab, next to the Notification icon, select "Points". The Points page allows you to view the actions that have earned you points, your current balance and how you've spent your points so far. On your dashboard, you are also able to see your points balance.
How can I spend my points?
You can spend your points by selecting "Rewards Centre" from the header menu - here you can see the full list of rewards available in your country.
How long will it take to receive my reward once ordered?
Please allow up to 3 weeks for delivery. When you redeem your points for a reward you will be asked to confirm your postal address, email address, or PayPal email address (depending on the reward and country). Before you confirm your purchase, please ensure all your information is correct to avoid any delays in delivery.
Who is eligible for Toluna rewards?
In order to be eligible for Toluna rewards you must be a registered user on the site corresponding with your country of residence.
How will I receive my rewards?

Who is eligible for the Toluna Millionaire Sweepstakes organised by Toluna?
All registered Toluna members can participate in the Toluna Millionaire Sweepstakes. However, to be admitted, participants must have a profile image and be "active" members, which includes (but is not limited to) answering surveys, posting topics, polls or commenting in a discussion thread within 30 days prior to each sweepstakes draw.
How does the Toluna Millionaire Sweepstakes work?
Every day an active Toluna Influencer will win 1,000,000 points. To participate and have a chance to become the Toluna Millionaire of the day, you must have at least 1 valid ticket at the time of the draw! You can earn tickets by participating in surveys or by purchasing them in the reward centre for 500 points. Read our Terms for more details.
How will I know if I have been selected as a winner in the Toluna Millionaire Sweepstakes?
The lucky winner of the day will be notified by email and/or by notifications on Toluna.com. Their 1,000,000 points will be credited automatically to their Toluna account within 24h of the sweepstakes results.

Can we earn points for creating content on Toluna?
Yes. You can earn up to 1,000 points for each piece of content you create on Toluna. com. The Toluna Team encourages quality over quantity, so content posted in the community is manually credited.

What is quality content?
Is considered quality content any poll or topic that has a title, a personal opinion and an image or video to illustrate. To ensure that your poll or topic is incentivised, please make sure that your opinion is clearly expressed and that your subject and language respect our terms and conditions.
Are there other community actions for which we can earn points?
Yes, you can also earn points or rewards by participating in contests launched by the Toluna Team. You can also create your own contests and ask the Team to help you incentivize the winners, in such cases you can also earn a 5,000 points bonus for your initiative.

What is Toluna magazine?
The Toluna Magazine is a monthly summary of all the interesting things that have happened in the community. You will receive it by email, but if you don't want to miss out, you can always access all magazines by clicking on the Magazine link in the footer.

How many points will I earn for inviting a friend?
Each time you invite a friend, your account will be credited with 500 points once your friend completes their registration to join the Toluna community. To make sure that all new friends are real people, please note that you can only earn points for a maximum of 10 new friends per month.

I've forgotten my password, what can I do?
"At the top of the home page, click on ""Log in"" and in the same pop-up box you will also be presented with the option ""Forgot password?"". You will be asked to provide the email address associated with your Toluna account and receive a reset password email with a link that will remain valid for 24 hours. Following this link will allow you to create a new password for Toluna.
